Service Learning Reflection
For the past 8 weeks, I have been working with Julie Chang on her app PawPal. The app is designed to report lost pets and lost pet sightings. Ideally, the app is supposed to notify owners if their lost pet has potentially been sighted.
As an animal lover, I was excited to contribute to an app that is all about the welfare of pets.
- What went well? What would you improve? What was the most impactful part? What challenges did you face?
- It was definitely a learning process to understand what goes on in the background of an iOS app. I do not use a Mac regularly and it was my fault for not confirming that working on a Mac computer is necessary for this site project. Another challenge was learning a new programming language in such a short time. Any improvements I would make has nothing to do with the site itself, but for the class, make sure that what students will be working on is relevant to what we're learning in the program.
- What advice do you have for future SL students?
- Do not wait last minute to complete your hours. I had 8 hours to complete in 3 days and by this point a lot had already been finished so it was hard to find things to do. I regret not spending 1 hour per day working on this project and finishing sooner.
